Getting a CDL requires meeting both federal and state requirements. Federal rules set the baseline — each state adds its own specifics on top.

Federal Requirements (All States)

Age

  • 18+: Intrastate driving (within your state)
  • 21+: Interstate driving and hazmat

Medical

  • Pass a DOT physical
  • Vision: 20/40 in each eye
  • Renew medical card every 2 years

ELDT (Since Feb 2022)

  • Complete training from a registered FMCSA provider
  • Applies to Class A, Class B, and endorsement upgrades

Knowledge Tests Required

  • General Knowledge (all CDL classes)
  • Combination Vehicles (Class A)
  • Air Brakes (if applicable)
  • Endorsement tests as needed

Skills Test (3 Parts)

  1. Pre-trip inspection
